Are you tired of the word remix? Us too!
And with that we introduce the Create (!)- Six Dreams Divided Remix Contest!

A Prospect of Freedom, Create (!)'s first full length album in five years is set for release on March 28th.
The album is currently available for only $10.99.

A collection of slow burn improvisations, A Prospect of Freedom is a full length collaboration with Raymond Raposa of Castanets, Lynn Johnston (Red Krayola, Eugene Chadbourne) and Kris Tiner (Empty Cage Quartet, Wadada Leo Smith) in addition to the core trio of longstanding Create (!) members: Justice Constantine, Orlando Greenhill and Chris Schlarb.

Producer Chris Schlarb gave a clear mandate: No solos. And it works wonders. On each track the ensemble runs and rests together without the crutch of self. Ascetically focusing on each other so intently the group finds a distinct voice, a one of a kind session producing stunning results.

And what about the remix?

One of the album's most meditative tracks, Six Dreams Divided, is being made available track by track for the remix treatment. BE CREATE(!)-IVE. Do something bold! Do something subtle! Redo the song live! Turn it into a acid house track! Mix and match! Each of the six musicians tracks are solo'd out, ready to be turned inside out.

SOURCE TRACKS BELOW
Justice Constantine- drums
Orlando Greenhill- acoustic bass
Lynn Johnston- bass clarinet
Raymond Raposa- electric guitar
Chris Schlarb- electric guitar
Kris Tiner- trumpet

And again for reference here is the original track: Create (!)- Six Dreams Divided.

When you're done send your remix in mp3 format to sixdreamsdivided@gmail.com

The winner receives a $150 cash prize from Sounds Are Active and a free subscription to all the label?s releases in 2006. And there's gonna be a lot. Let me tell you.

RULES
Anyone can submit a remix (judges are excluded from winning of course). Including any artists on Sounds Are Active. Just to make things interesting, we are asking a few people outside the label to judge these remixes. So far here are your judges:

Dave Longstreth (of The Dirty Projectors)
Jason Munn (of the small stakes)
Chris Cantalini (of GorillaVsBear.net)
Adam Varga (of Dailysonic.com)
Chris Scofield (of Strange Attractors Audio House)
Judy Miller (of MotorMouthMedia)
Maria Gonima (of Tigerbeat6 and Asphodel)

All remixes must be received by March 20th, 2006. The winner will be announced on March 27th, the day before the album's release.

By submitting a remix you are giving Sounds Are Active the right to use said remix for any and all promotional activites tied to the contest. If we want to do anything really crazy with your remix of our music we'll get in touch first.

~Possibly silly question....What's the judges' view points on using the remixes in a remix? I haven't listened to anything for this contest, yet, but was just wondering.

that's a fair enough question... i think the only trouble with that is you'd have to wait for one to remix and the deadline is the 20th of March... I don't see much harm in it though. That's essentially what I did for a remix on the Xn. ideas without numbers album...

how do i import quicktime files and or save them to use them in an app.? Maybe you guys should change the format to wav. or mp3 as like real audio or wmvs. yeah? The quicktime thing is confusing cause it registers as a movie file. Can you guys please make the tracks availble as plain audio tracks? this will be fun

i guess there's two ways you can snag them. you can either click on the name of the musician and that will open a new window. when the track is loaded in that window you can "save as" and the file is already in mp3 format.

the second option would be to just "right click" or "save to desktop" as you click on the musician's name.

all that having been said the files are mp3 format. encoded at 192kps for the drums (which are in stereo) and 96kps for all the others (as they are mono tracks).

if anyone else is having any trouble getting these tracks or has a better explanation on how to get them just post it up here. keep in mind I'm on a Mac so if there are better ways for all you Windoze (Wink) cats let a brother know!

I have to admit that, although I've never done a remix and haven't heard many, the thought of playing with Create(!) tracks held great appeal to me. I downloaded them all, put them into Cubase SX3, and started tweaking them. Listening to the music, how the parts ebb and flow so organically, inspired me. I found a small section of the tune, maybe 16 bars or something, and looped them.

I tried to find processing for each track that transfigured it, yet preserved some of its original vibe. Dynamics processing, delays, modulation effects, panning, and distortion swim in an ambient atmosphere that is both haunting, meditative, and uplifting.

As almost an afterthought, I felt the urge to add a vocal element. Create(!)'s instrumental esthetic eschews singing, I suspect, so I knew that it would have to be something that sat nicely with everything else, and didn't draw too much attention to itself. I sang a phrase, "Sing with the Spirit, Sing with the Mind," a reference to 1 Corinthians 14. I then used a 'Time Stretch' algorythm, increasing its length nearly 1000%.

The trumpet track remains unaltered.

You can hear the results of my tweaking.

You can see a screen shot of SX3.
